On 23 January 2014, the Royal Commonwealth Society in Hong Kong held its 31st AGM. The Chairman, Mrs Joan Campbell, reported that 2012 had been a very fruitful year given regular lunch meetings with interesting guest speakers and other events.
On 12 March, the British Consul-General had read the Queen’s Speech at a Commonwealth Day Reception in the Garden Room of the Hong Kong Club, attended by Consuls-General and our patron, Dame Anson Chan. On 12 May, the Annual Ball had been well attended, while the raffle and silent auction had raised a substantial amount for charity. On 3 June, an outdoor lunch was held in a marquee at the Indian Recreation Club to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. In the summer we bid farewell to Nigerian Consul and Council Member, Peter Emuze, and South African Consul-General, Mrs Tembo. On St Andrew’s Day, our patron Dr Hari Harilela, held a dinner at his Kowloon residence and in November, Dr Verner Bickley presented prizes to the winners of the RCS Essay Competition. In December, an enjoyable Christmas Party was held at the Helena May. The Society’s accounts also showed a healthy surplus.
Immediately after the meeting, a cheque for $50,000 was presented to a representative of Camp Quality, a local charity which provides holidays for children with cancer. This amount was raised through a raffle and silent auction held at last year’s Annual Ball.
