Diwali Festival 2017

Join in the Diwali festivities in Trafalgar Square, as thousands of people come together to celebrate the Hindu, Sikh and Jain festival of lights.

Enthusiastically celebrated by people of all nationalities, races and religions, Diwali, the festival of lights creates a magical world of joy and festivity. It celebrates the triumphant victory of good over evil - and the glory of light over darkness, a beam of hope over despair. The word Diwali or Deepavali (in its full form), means 'a row of lamps'. Diwali marks a new beginning, a renewal of commitment to family values, ad represents all the good virtues we seek such as love, reflection, forgiveness and knowledge. Diwali is timed to coincide with the new moon in October or November, so the actual date varies from year to year. In 2017, Diwali is celebrated on or around 19 October, however, the Trafalgar Square celebration takes place on 15 October.

Everyone is welcome to celebrate the festival in Trafalgar Square. This year's packed programme includes a lively music and dance stage line up alongside an authentic street good market, craft and community stalls plus dance, yoga, henna art and much more.

Diwali Festival is organised by the Mayor of London with support from Diwali in London Committee
